We’re the Devereux Quartet, an 805-based contemporary classical ensemble proudly bringing creative collaboration to the Santa Barbara area.
Classical music can be daunting to approach and participate in, especially for those of us who are excluded from historical narratives and underrepresented on stage. It’s hard to grapple with the history of racism and misogyny that feels embedded in the culture.
Even so, classical music has been shaped by diversity, community, and innovation for centuries. In this program featuring works by our friends Sophia Ahmad and Justice Claveria and pieces by Florence Price and Jessie Montgomery, we’ll celebrate the voices of people of color who define the sound of American classical music.
We’ll close out the night with a set by Chicano dreampop band Maria. We can’t wait to share this evening with you!
